Global and Taiwan's TB Overview
  • Taiwan has a moderate-burden of TB, with TB incidence rate lower than South Korea, Singapore, but higher than United State and Japan.
TB Incidence
  • In 2023, there were 6,584 new cases of TB, resulting in an incidence rate of 28.2 cases per 100,000 populaton.
  • From 2005 to 2023, cumulative reduction of 60.0% in number of TB cases, and 61.1% in TB incidence rate.
The majority of TB cases were in individuals aged 65 or older, accounting for 64.2%
The incidence rate increased with age.
AFS(+) cases accounted for 42.7% of all new cases, and Bac(+) cases accounted for 82.4% of all new cases.
TB incidence rate in the mountainous aboriginal regions was 84.8 per 100,000 population,
with Renai Township of Nantou county recording the highest incidence rate,
followed by Haiduan township of Taitung county as the second highest.
TB Mortality
In 2023, there were 452 TB death, with a mortality rate of 1.9 deaths per 100,000 populaton.
From 2005 to 2023, cumulative reduction of 53.4% in number of TB deaths, and 55.8% in TB mortality rate.
Note:
Since 2019, Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare has adopted the European Union system (IRIS institute) for determining causes of death. Historical data predating 2019 requires conversion before it can be compared with data from 2019 onwards.




The majority of TB deaths were in individuals aged 65 or older, accounting for 86.3%.
The mortality rate increased with age.
TB mortality rate in the mountainous aboriginal regions was 7.4 per 100,000 population.
Drug-resistant TB
In 2023, there were 66 MDR-TB, 40 RR-TB (w/o MDR), 10 pre-XDR-TB and 0 XDR-TB.

  2. The RR-TB registry policy was initiated in 2017. RR-TB cases in 2017 included newly diagnosed and prevalent cases.

TB Classification and Site of Disease



In 2023, 6,584 new TB cases were diagnosed. Of these, 72.8% were bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB, 21.8% were clinically-diagnosed pulmonary TB and 5.5% had extrapulmonary TB.

Additionally, 228 relapse cases were diagnosed during the same year.
TB/HIV Comorbidity
Out of the 6,584 new TB cases in 2023, 28 were HIV-positive. Of these,
96.4% (27/28) were male, and 96.4% (27/28) were under the age of 65.
Foreign-born TB
In 2023, 714 foreign-born TB cases were diagnosed, mainly from Indonesia, Vietnam, and Philippines. The majority of cases involved foreign migrant workers, and were predominantly between 25 and 34 years old.
TB Treatment Outcomes
For new TB cases diagnosed in 2022, the TB treatment outcomes at 12 months:
67.9% had successful treatment, 25.1% died (either due to TB or other causes), 0.4% experienced treatment failure, 1.6% were lost to follow-up, 0.1% were transferred out, 4.8% remained non-evaluated.
Treatment success rate for new TB cases: 88.7% for TB aged 0-44, 79.2% for TB aged 45-64, and 59.4% for TB aged 65 or older.
For bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB new cases diagnosed in 2022, the TB treatment outcomes at 12 months:
60.1% were cured, 4.1% completed treatment, 29.2% died (either due to TB or other causes), 0.6% experienced treatment failure, 1.2% were lost to follow-up, 0.0% were transferred out, 4.8% remained non-evaluated.
Treatment success rate for bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB new cases: 86.0% for TB aged 0-44, 76.3% for TB aged 45-64, and 56.4% for TB aged 65 or older.
